Swimwear Through Through The last 100 years

Whilst you are putting your bathing suit on and heading for the water, the grass or the sand, have you ever given a thought to those generations who came before you? While you are sitting there in your swimming trunks or bikini, spare a thought for those who have worn a swimsuit before you through the ages. The history of the swimsuit and the history of women’s swimwear in particular is fascinating

We are so fortunate nowadays in the Developed world to be free of the shackles of the disapproval of society concerning beachwear and swimming costumes, because it still goes on in the Muslim and Asian world. They see our easy approach to near nudity as disgraceful, but so did our fore-fathers and particularly our fore-mothers.

But there was a weird duality in their reprobation. I have seen photos of female bathers in the latest fashion designs taken around about 1900 where nipples are plainly visible, but the legs were covered in stockings. These are clearly family photos and not pornography, which was rife then as well.  Read more...

Travelling By Train

Over the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, particularly in the United States. This might have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most analysts put it down to a result of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ response to those acts of terrorism have resulted in massive hikes in the degree of security at airports and quite rightly so, but travellers are also put off by the lengthy queues and invasive searches at airports. This problem is even worse at busy airports and during holiday periods such as while schools are off.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to do your own driving and that brings its own issues, especially if you are with children and especially if you are a single parent. Apart from that, travelling by train is a holiday in its own right. Your holiday starts the minute you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.  Read more...

What Are All Inclusive Packages?

Are you thinking of going on a vacation in the near future? How do you normally go? Do you fly there and then sort yourself out or do you take vacation packages? It is clear that vacation packages are simpler and often cheaper too.

If you go DIY, you will need to book reservations on an airplane or a bus and a hotel and taxis and a car hire company. If you would rather avoid all this, you could book either a vacation package of one of the all inclusive vacation packages.

Although many vacation packages are extremely good, some people refuse to use them. This can be for several reasons, but the most common are out of a of feelings of adventure, independence and snobbishness. In fact, most of the people who do not take vacation packages are younger, single individuals.

Married people with children are the main users of vacation packages and especially all inclusive vacation packages. There is a difference between the two kinds. All inclusive vacation packages are great for families with hungry children. Electronic Bug Zapper

If you are not yet acquainted with the handheld bug killer, you are really going to love it and if you have used one before, I bet you’ll welcome it back like an old, long-lost friend! The electronic bug zapper does just what it says it does: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, really well.

Any bug that is touched by the wiring of the electric insect zapper is fried. Smaller insects like midges and mosquitoes are disintegrated with a very satisfying flash and a crack. Larger bug, like house flies and wasps are killed, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

How many times have these flying bugs taken the edge off an otherwise enjoyable evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a good night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! Barry, South Wales: Ancient History: Part 3

Barry Castle was owned by William de Barri in the twelfth century, but it was raized to the ground by Llewellyn Bren in 1316. Many believe that the Cavaliers rebuilt and that the Roundheads destroyed it again. Whatever is true, it was never rebuilt again after that.

The Norman interlopers were thoroughly hated by the local people and they had to build large mansions to defend themselves from the not infrequent raids on them by the people of the valleys and the mountains. During the time of the reign of Henry III, there were 12 castles within six miles of Barry; in Glamorgan, there were 30 castles and in South Wales as a whole there were 150 of those symbols of oppression.

Porthkerry and its church which lies on the wooded hill to the west of it are said to have taken their name from Ceri, who, in turn, is said to have founded a port there, ie ‘Port Ceri’. People say that Ceri ap Caid, the King of Essyllwg, lived in Porthkerry before the Christian era and that his bard, Corvinor, was the first to build a ship with sails and a rudder for the ‘race of Cymru’. Some believe that Ceri was a nephew or grandson of Caractacus (Caradog) and that he took over the leadership of the government in South Wales when Caractacus had to journey to Rome.  Read more...
