Part 2 – Butterflies of Mexico

In part one of this series we discussed the incredible Monarch butterfly and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve near Mexico City. We also took a look at a few of the Swallowtail species found in Mexico, and how to spot them in their natural environment. Now let’s continue with our dialogue on butterflies of Mexico.

One of the most incredible looking butterflies in existence is the Glasswing butterfly, or Greta oto. It is fairly small, compared to other species found in the area, with a wingspan of about two inches. Viewing the Glasswing from the side, one would see a long thin tan colored body, wings outlined in copper and thin black veins crossing the body of the wings. The rest of the wing area is completely clear – like glass. The tissue between the veins is thin, transparent and is not covered with the customary colored scales other butterflies are. Thus, the Glasswing has an appearance of glass. Another interesting trait of the Glasswing is its ability to feed on toxic when in the caterpillar stage of life. The toxins contain alkaloids, which convert to pheromones in the males, making them more attractive to females.

Electronic Bug Zapper

If you are not yet acquainted with the handheld bug killer, you are really going to love it and if you have used one before, I bet you’ll welcome it back like an old, long-lost friend! The electronic bug zapper does just what it says it does: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, really well.

Any bug that is touched by the wiring of the electric insect zapper is fried. Smaller insects like midges and mosquitoes are disintegrated with a very satisfying flash and a crack. Larger bug, like house flies and wasps are killed, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

How many times have these flying bugs taken the edge off an otherwise enjoyable evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a good night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get your own back with the hand held bug zapper.

Home Renovations DIY

It appears that there has been a decline in consumer confidence in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams highlighted on television or the bribery and corruption endemic in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now carrying out home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn’t they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects combined with an eye for creativity is often enough to complete the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to DIY home improvements?

There are many people attempting to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of experience in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine around the country.

As a result, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being finished to their liking. At times they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the arrangement.

You do not have to trust and pay someone to enhance your home. Why not have a go yourself?
