Going to the coast where the waves are is an extremely pleasant experience. For those of us who would love to go, it’s important to figure out different methods on how to save money with surfing. Those types of activities aren’t usually all that cheap, but as long as you have a plan and you prepare ahead of time, you’ll be fine.

Instead of trying to travel half around the world to go surfing, try looking for popular spots near where you live. The coasts of Hawaii probably sound like heaven to you, but the thing is that Hawaii is extremely expensive and harbors several tourist traps. If you use the internet to your advantage, you can search for beaches closer to you instead of going to touristy spots.

Maybe you want to just get away for a while and leave your home town. If you go to a place that’s inhabited by a lot of surfers, you’ll probably be able to find a few camps set up specifically for people traveling. Before you go on your trip, however, be sure to pack the things you need in advance. Then, you won’t have to spend much money on personal items. Part 2 – Butterflies of Mexico

In part one of this series we discussed the incredible Monarch butterfly and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve near Mexico City. We also took a look at a few of the Swallowtail species found in Mexico, and how to spot them in their natural environment. Now let’s continue with our dialogue on butterflies of Mexico.

One of the most incredible looking butterflies in existence is the Glasswing butterfly, or Greta oto. It is fairly small, compared to other species found in the area, with a wingspan of about two inches. Viewing the Glasswing from the side, one would see a long thin tan colored body, wings outlined in copper and thin black veins crossing the body of the wings. The rest of the wing area is completely clear – like glass. The tissue between the veins is thin, transparent and is not covered with the customary colored scales other butterflies are. Thus, the Glasswing has an appearance of glass. Another interesting trait of the Glasswing is its ability to feed on toxic when in the caterpillar stage of life. The toxins contain alkaloids, which convert to pheromones in the males, making them more attractive to females.  Read more...

Prehistoric Burial Mounds of Volusia County – Part 2

Ancient burial mounds and ceremonial earthen mounds have been well documented in North America for hundreds of years. The numerous earthen mounds of Volusia County in Florida, offers one of the most diverse collections in the United States.

The mounds give archaeologists and the inquisitive a unique glimpse in to the prehistoric past of the St John’s era peoples of the Florida coast. Most of the mounds have earthen bases and are either partially or completely made of sea shells. All of the mound sites are unique in design, shape and can vary in purpose.

OLD FORT MOUND

Located at the Old Fort Park, in the city of New Smyma Beach, Florida, the site is mainly known for its legendary 19th century ruins of an old military fort. However, the conquina stone foundations upon which the old fort was built is in fact a massive shell-mound of prehistory.

Excavation at the site shows that the mound beneath the fort is but a remnant of a much larger collection of shellfish deposits. Even though most of the deposits had been removed and used in local road construction, there was a tremendous deep deposit of local shellfish remaining.  Read more...
